Velocity Medical Solutions Presenting Lunch Symposium at AAMD

Velocity Medical Solutions Presenting Lunch Symposium June 12 at AAMD
ATLANTA (May 10, 20120) - Velocity Medical will present a lunch symposium at AAMD
on Tuesday, June 12 titled "State of the Union: The Changing Role of Contouring and
Image Registration in Radiation Oncology." The lunch session will take place from
11:45 - 12:45 PM and seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Velocity's booth at
the show is #113, and the company is currently accepting appointments for demos.
Velocity has applied for both MDCB and CAMPEP credits, and expects the request
to be granted. Attending the lunch symposium would result in one credit.
Symposium Program
Chuck McCoy: Chief Medical Dosimetrist at UPMC/Shadyside Pittsburgh, PA
“State of the Union: The Changing Role of Image Registration in Radiation Oncology"
Abstract:
Advances in medical imaging and the ability to accurately register these complimentary
modalities to planning CTs have created opportunities in radiation oncology for improved
target localization resulting in more accurate and precise treatment plans.
This presentation addresses some of the imaging history and technological advances,
particularly in CT/PET scanning and deformable registration. In addition to image registration
basics, practical aspects and treatment site specific guidelines will be presented.
These technologies can fundamentally change the treatment planning process and in
some ways redefine the role of the dosimetrist.
Learning objectives/attendees will be able to:
- Describe basic principles and some history of rigid and deformable image registration
- Recognize the importance of CT to CT/PET image deformable registration and identify
basic characteristics of PET scans as they apply to radiation oncology treatment planning - Indicate a variety of body site applications of appropriate complimentary imaging
modalities and describe preferred image registration techniques - Evaluate some of the opportunities for new procedures and modified work flow to
increase treatment plan quality by involving Dosimetry in a more engaged role in
the target definition process

“Contouring - State of the Art Tools to Improve Quality and Speed Workflow"
Abstract:
Contouring defines the radiation oncology treatment. Some love doing it, some hate doing it, and it
can be a very time consuming requirement for all. It's also crucially important to the planning
process leading to good plans and improved outcomes for the patient.
The tools are evolving and modern contouring platforms are now doing some amazing things
to assist in creating the best structures possible in the minimum time. The most flexible
platforms can give the dosimetrist slick manual tools or can automate many functions.
The purpose of this talk is to highlight where we are and where we are going to facilitate
both of these goals.
Learning objectives:
- Leveraging the existing tools within the software
- Manual contouring tools and ease of use
- Auto segmentation tools and tips on creating atlases
- Preparing for tools to come such as VelocityGRID services available in upcoming release
